Lily bulbs need at least 4 inches of soil on top and another inch at the bottom of the pot. Soil Lilies love sandy soil. The bulbs grow bigger in the sandy mix than in regular peat mixes. Drainage is also assured against accidents of over-watering. Ideally, the soil composition can have 40% sand, 30% peat and 30% compost. You can ensure that the plant is free from any pests by checking the undersides of the foliage and leaves for any possible signs of disease or insect. Make sure to buy lilies that look clean, well-potted, and with healthy foliages. As much as possible, avoid lilies that have yellowish leaves, wilted foliages, brownish leaf margins, and those that bear spots and blotches. There are different kinds of lilies found in Europe, India, across in Asia, from Japan to the Philippines. With the abundance of lilies in some areas, locals have developed creative and interesting uses of lilies and water lilies. There are some species found in the United States which can be planted or propagated by using bulbs. There are also Oriental varieties that can be kept indoors and are perfect as accent pieces but they need more pruning and maintenance. Since you are keeping lilies indoor, there are limitations to the variety that can be planted. You cannot just plant any lily variety you want because chances are, these will not grow properly. Blooms For its fragrance and the exuberance of its large blooms, the Oriental lily is the hands-down winner in a summer garden. Its sweetly-scented flamboyant blooms begin their show in mid to late summer. (This is the time the Asiatic hybrids are finishing their own bloom time.) The blossoms are in splashy shades of white, pink, and crimson. They are suited to hot summer areas but are also resistant to winter cold. Species (division 9) Typically, species lilies are wild lilies. These are the wild types that breeders use to create some of the more beautiful hybrids of today. Species lilies have delicate charms on their own. For a plant that is easy to grow and cultivate, lilies is one colorful addition to your garden.
