Comedy acts, shows, and movies are somehow considered as staples by such channels. Television is full of many standup comedians, who dominate the screen during almost all important times of the day. So how could you learn how to become an effective standup comedian and survive the already intense competition? If your audience mostly comprises of people in their early 20s, you should not deliver jokes about celebrities who are from the distant past. Not all young people may know Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn. They may not be able to relate to the Beatles. Instead, you may deliver jokes about Tom Cruise or Justin Timberlake. It is like entering a dungeon once you are in, there is no turning back. You should be prepared to be hurt emotionally even when you only intended to make people laugh. It is very different when you are only performing in front of people who know you by heart, like your family and friends. They see you as someone entertaining and someone whom they will support no matter what. If you aim to do well at it, be ready to encounter many challenges and failures along the way. The audience may not instantly like you, but you should always try to impress and make them laugh. The hardest part when learning standup comedy and starting out a career at it is beginning into the journey. As you write your standup comedy material, remember to put the punchline of a joke at the end or near the end of a sentence or paragraph. You should not put it at the beginning. To illustrate, take this example: A catechist asked his 6-year old pupils why people make it a point to stay quiet while in the church. The usual themes are murder, drug abuse, war, terminal illness, insanity, rape, disability, crime, and chauvinism. Let s bring another color in the genre list with blue comedy which ventures into topics of profane, indecent, and obscene nature. Audiences that dare to partake in such events are commonly exposed to and at times offended and shocked by the normal cursing and sexual imagery that accompany it.
