How loose, decorative, tight, nubby or soft a certain fabric is depends largely on the fabric weave. They can also cause a huge variance regarding the fabric s durability or strength. Types of weaves There are many kinds of fabric weaves. The most common ones are twill, rib, plain, Oxford, basket, satin, Uncut Pile, Chenille Weave, dobby, Cut Pile, Double Knit, leno, and jacquard. Once these are accomplished, the cotton is now ready for the spinning process which will transform it into thread. When cotton is spun, the shorter fibers are drawn out from the huge mass of cotton and then twists them all together into a very long and continuous thread. Origin of spinning wheels Most of the spinning wheels used in India are the ones the Natives called charka. The Double Drive Wheel This type of wheel is named after the drive band. It goes around the spinning wheel a couple of times. The drive band turns the flyer, described as the horse-shoe shaped wooden piece that surrounds the bobbin. Because of the whorl size difference, the bobbin whorl turns faster than the flyer whorl. Spinning Tips The hands will repeat the pinch, pull and slide motions, while the lower hand will sometimes reach down to rotate the spindle. When you practice, you will feel the constant motion. The yarn will be strong enough to support the movement. Wind by keeping the yarn from tangling then catch behind the elbow. With wool, seamstresses could now come up with shoulder blankets, dresses, shirts, belts, door hangings, saddle blankets, hair ties, blankets, and kilts. From men to women When weaving was first practiced, many looked at it like it was a man s work. In fact, back then, the men were the ones who could be found weaving.
