They should not be fed food containing animal protein. They may relish pizza and all junk food, but that is not good for their health. Give them a limited quantity of vegetables. Do not feed them on spinach. They require diet containing rich quantity of Vitamin D3, calcium and phosphorous. They can be given proper commercial food as a portion of their diet. It is not difficult to offer them food rather than feeding animals. However, herbivore does not signify that iguana will eat any plant. To keep them healthy and to maintain their growth, they should be given a balanced and nutritious diet. It may constitute green and leafy vegetables and other food. You can add some lettuce. There should be proper size of the group and ratio of male and females. For one male, you can keep one or more females. It is better to maintain the number of male iguanas smaller than females; otherwise males may be killed fighting with each other during mating. The nest can be created with some media like using 100% potting soil and the eggs can be buried under it. Red iguanas should be furnished with a shallow container for their food and water. These containers should be regularly cleaned and disinfected to avert any infection. As iguanas like to climb up the branches of trees, you can place some branches, twigs, barks, rocks and broad limbs and similar material for them. It is hard to absorb the animal proteins and it may produce uric acid in the body which causes gouty arthritis. 2. Water: iguanas consume only a meager quantity of water. There should be sufficient amount of humidity in their cage, otherwise they may get dehydrated. This will harm them. You should give them plenty of water to drink. It is a fact that these tiny animals can turn very large very soon and may also become aggressive. However, they are generally good pets and you have to take their proper care for food and living. If you want to keep them as pets, it is better you acquire some basic knowledge about the nature of iguanas, the way they live, their habits, food, behavior and what are the necessities for their existence.
